BP Texas City Refinery - Industrial Accident 2010
British Petroleum is reporting yet another industrial accident today. According to BP’s refinery spokesperson, two pipefitters were seriously burned by steam yesterday at the Texas City plant. One of the workers was airlifted to University of Texas Medical Branch – Galveston and the other was transported to the Mainland Medical Center in Texas City. Neither workers’ status has been updated at this time.
BP is still reeling from the industrial explosion that caused the Gulf Of Mexico oil spill earlier this year as well as the ongoing investigation surrounding the 41 day benzene release a few months ago. At least 11 workers are missing about 52 miles off the coast of Venice, LA. Workers on a offshore drilling platform owned by Deep Water Horizon experienced a fiery blast about 10:00pm on Tuesday, according to the Coast Guard. At the time of the blast, DWH thinks there were 126 workers on the offshore drilling platform. With mixed reports coming in, most say that 11 are missing, but some reports state as many as 17 are missing. Workers that were able to escape the blast, were boated back to shore by a workboat that was in the area. Coast Guard is still perusing the immediate area around the platform looking for any signs of other life boats. Seven DWH workers were airlifted to hospitals in New Orleans, and at least 2 of those were moved to specialty burn units.

A construction accident at the Teen Challenge of the Permian Basin in Midland, Texas resulted in one death and another serious injury. Cross Crete Concrete Company of Justin, Texas was hired to apply a seal coat on the floor of a new facility being built. The contractors were working in a room with improper ventilation. It is expected that the Occupational Health and Safety Administration – OSHA – will investigate the death and injury.
William D. Weeks, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jeffrey T. Wylie, 40, was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital for injuries resulting from inhaling toxic fumes.

An industrial accident at Palestine High School resulted in the wrongful death of a construction worker. The 26 year old construction worker was pinned beneath a portable building that was being prepared for removal from the school grounds. In order to reach the worker, first responders had to remove the floor from the portable building. Coworkers indicated the construction worker was assisting in shoring the underside of the building when a support snapped causing the building to collapse and kill him.
The man was dead when they were finally able to reach his body. The construction project was being run by TJ Construction from Troup, Texas. The wrongful death happened in Palestine, Texas. It is likely that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration – OSHA – will investigate the death.

A resident of Rio Grande City, Texas was killed in an oil rig accident. The death occured at a natural gas drilling site in South Caddo Parish Louisiana. The oil rig was being operated by Trinidad Drilling Ltd. It is owned by Chesapeake Operating, Inc.
An investigation has yet determined how the industrial accident occurred. It is expected that OSHA – the Occupational Safety and Health Administraion – will conduct an investigation. Land based oil rigs have many different companies that perform services and operations. OSHA will determine which companies were involved in the jobsite death. The coroner confired the cause of death was a head injury.

An accident at a Weatherford, Texas construction site injured three workers and sent two to area hospitals. Construction workers were setting decking on tresses at a job site at Weatherford Ridge Shopping Center near the South Main and Interstate 20 intersection when a load of plywood shifted and knocked over tresses.
All three injured workers suffered wrist, head and back injuries. One worker is being treated at Weatherford Regional Medical Center for among other injuries a compound wrist fracture. An investigation is currently being conducted to determine the cause of the construction accident. It is unclear if the Occupational Safety and Health Administration – OSHA - will conduct an investigation.

A 25 year old construction worker died when the walls of the trench he was working in collapsed and pinned him to a sewer main. Rigoberto Tovar was working to install a storm sewer line about 10 feet underground near the intersection of South Tower and Ridge Roads in Alamo, Texas when the construction accident occurred. Tovar was standing in a 6 foot deep trench when the earthen walls gave way and knocked him into the sewer main. Four other workers were nearby when the death occurred.
Tovar was working for M Construction of McAllen, Texas which was hired as a private contractor for the project. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration - OSHA- is conducting an investigation.

A scaffold collapse on a construction site in Dickinson, Texas seriously injuring two workers. The scaffold was located outside a shopping center on FM 517. The workers were refurbishing the front facade of a shopping center.
One worker suffered a head injury. Another worker suffered a broken arm and hip. The witnesses to the fall indicated that the scaffold was installed on cinder blocks and bricks. Additionally, it appears that the workers were not provided fall protection. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration – OSHA – has stringent rules regarding scaffold construction and fall protection that is required to be followed by all erectors and users of scaffolds. It is the employer’s obligation to confirm that there is compliance with these rules on a construction site.

A construction worker was injured in an industrial accident in Baytown, Texas when he fell from a scaffold. The Scaffold was constructed on the side of Baytown hospital. The man was working as a part of a crew installing a sign when the fall happened. He was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital for medical treatment.

A construction worker in Lake Jackson, Texas was killed when he was exposed to poisonous gas in an unused sewer line. Erino Jose-Juan was under contract for the city when he was killed. During the course of his job, he crawled down a manhole to pull out a valve when he lost consciousness. Preliminary conclusions indicate that the 24 year old construction worker was exposed to hydrogen sulfide which is a poisonous gas that may result in loss of consciousness and death.
